Your Horror Movie Reviews
Here is our first official Horror Movie Review submitted by The Dark Master Santini for the film in theaters "HOSTEL Part II" WARNING: Movie Spoiler... Read at own risk.
-Initally, there were 2 reasons why I was, (for months), very much looking forward to the release of Hostel 2.
Firstly, I am a hard core horror movie fan; and secondly, I knew that parts of the movie were shot on location in a nightclub in Prague where I myself had performed in October of 2006.
So, with great anticipation I went a week ago to see this film with Charles, the owner and moderator of this web site.
Sadly, I was greatly disappointed with this new Hostel film.
While the first Hostel movie supplies the gore in combination with some characters you could get into as well as a plot and settings that were unique in their own right, the latest installment fails on practically all counts and is in fact a very weak and watered down rehash of the first.
Trying to provide a "new" twist on the first Hostel, Roth provides victims and heros in this film that are female as oppossed to the males predominently featured in Hostel 1.
However, this is where the differences between the two films stop and it may be this very use of nearly all female victims that forced Roth and Co. to greatly tone down the scenes of torture, murder, and mutilation I was expecting to see.
In this politically correct world apparently is it o.k. to see a naked man strapped to a chair getting tortured and killed but the same does not aply to the "gentler sex".
Not only were the gore and death scenes toned down but there really was very little that showed any real imagination or novelty in the way the victims were killed off.
Only one scant scene that reeked of Elizabeth Bathroy's real life treatment of her castle servant girls and her perchant for bathing in the blood of virgins gave me the slightest twing of, "Oh, this is different",... well, sort of.
The rest of the gore scenes are all basically the same old, "chair with straps or restraints on it mounted in the middle of a blood splattered room and a few tools lying on a table nearby".
So what?
The makers even screwed up one excellent chance for ellaboration when they showed us a "torture tool room" in the warehouse where killers who had paid for the priveledge could select the devices they would use on a victim.
All that is shown here are a bunch of ordinary tools hanging up on the walls with numbers next to them.
This scene could have been made much better if as the eyes pan over the tools and one of the killers is trying to make a selection there are split second flashes to a scene with that particular tool being used on a hapeless victim.
Such a rapid fire montage of images would have had a great impact.
Also missing was an exploration into this sinister "Hunting Club" company that kidnaps these victims and offers them to wealthy clients.
After having seen the first Hostel, I went into this one wanting to know more, much more, about this "company" and how it was concieved, etc.
Instead of offering the audience any of this to flesh out the plot, the makers of Hostel 2 apparantly decided that it would be good enough to simply show some more big aryian type threatening European males that ran the death factory and leave it at that.
VERY disappointing.
Sadly, the makers of Hostel 2 have chosen to insult the intelligence of the audience by falling into the dumb pattern, (often repeated), of thinking that just because the first film was a huge success they did not need to go the extra mile to offer anything fresh or interesting.
They were banking on the name "HOSTEL" itself to lure in the droves who had seen the first.
Too bad I was one of those who took the bait.
However, if the 2 people besides Charles and myself who were in the theatre to watch the film were any indication, the word is already out that HOSTEL 2 is to be avoided at all costs.
Not because of the gore, the violence, and the terror but instead because of what this film lacks on all levels.
